Import and Export Formats



Geoida supports a range of import and export formats for both point and observation data:

Some of the formats offered for observation import to the e-Data, Traverse and Least Squares Network Adjustment options are also available for the import of point data in the Import option, however the discussion that follows will be primarily related to the import and export of observation data.

Extract files

An Extract file may be created when processing an observation file or data set with the e-Data or Traverse options - any control survey, traverse or network observations detected within the data will be "extracted" from the data set and subjected to a process of analysis and optimisation. During this procedure, distances are balanced where possible over forward and reverse lines and reduced to horizontal and vertical components, and repeated horizontal angles are compiled and meaned. These optimised observations are written to the Extract file.

There are two types of Extract file, the Standard Extract file and the CSV Extract file:

The main advantage of the CSV format over the Standard format is that the CSV Extract file is emminently the more suitable for export of observation data, while the Standard Extract file is intended for use within Geoida only and, if necessary, is easier to edit for that purpose.

Note that both Extract file formats contain horizontal distances and vertical components reduced from slope distance and vertical angle observations and do not contain raw distance observations. If raw observations are required for export to external applications, selection of the CSV Raw Format for export will be more appropriate - refer to Import and Export Formats.

CSV Raw Export

The Geoida Raw Export format is a CSV format used for the export of raw observations from either the Traverse or Least Squares Network Adjustment options. Observations are exported as-is in 3D form and may contain slope distance and vertical (zenith) angle observations, heights of instrument and target, height differences, as well as the usual horizontal angle, direction or azimuth observations.

The structure of the Raw Export format is defined in the header line of the export file - when imported to a spreadsheet or similar application the header line will identify the fields and permit the data to be accurately loaded in column format. Do not change the layout of the file.

When exported from the Traverse option, multiple observation types may be contained within one line within the file depending on how the data has been entered, whereas when exported from the Least Squares Network Adjustment option, observation types will be written separately to the file as categorised by the observation tabs within the form as in the example above.

Note: Only terrestrial observations are exported from the Least Squares Network Adjustment option - GNSS observations are not exported.

The Raw Export format is ideal for the export of raw 3D observation data without the application of any corrections or reductions; it is identical to the Foreign CSV format for observation import considered in the Import section below.

  Import

Geoida provides a range of formats for the import of point coordinate data via the Import option, and for the import of observation data to the e-Data, Traverse, and Least Squares Network Adjustment options for further processing. The use of most data formats is straight forward, but the formats discussed below are those for which some additional explanation is necessary.


Foreign CSV

General information - Two different foreign CSV formats are used for point and observation import and each will be discussed in further detail below, however Geoida otherwise treats them identically and observes the following principles with which any CSV files intended for import must comply:
